While many people may not realize it, the nutritional needs of athletes are much different than those who do much less in a day.
Athletes are on a whole different nutritional plane than those who do not partake in vigorous athletic activity, and for that reason their nutritional needs are much different.
High performance cars need high performance fuel to keep themselves going, and the same goes for human bodies that are high performance like that of an athlete.
It is said that athletes sweat more in five years of their life than the average lazy person does during their whole lifetime. While many people think that sweating is the loss of water, that is not the case. Sweating causes more than 50 all-important minerals and vitamins to be lost as well, and if these essential items are gone from the body for too long they can cause serious health issues.
How do athletes get the extra nutrition that they need to function from day to day? Many athletes are on strict diets, eating only things that can add significant nutritional value to their diet. Also, many athletes ensure that their body is fuelled properly by supplementing their diets with essential vitamins and minerals.

Athletes nutrition is very important. Proper nutrition for athletes is not difficult to obtain, but here are a few tips to get you started along the right path.
Drink plenty of water. Don't wait until you are thirsty to get a glass of water. A good workout can zap the body of fluids, and it may take as much as eight glasses of water per day to replace that fluid. This is an important part of being a healthy person, not an athlete.
Rather than three meals per day, have five meals per day. For an athlete, three meals are simply not enough fuel. Having five meals helps to ensure that energy levels remain high and enough protein makes it into the system throughout the day to maintain proper recovery and growth of the muscles.
For those athletes that find it hard to squeeze in five meals, pack healthy snacks to sustain you throughout the day. This can be anything from hard boiled eggs to Power bars.
Stay away from fad diets. Most fad diets are anything but proper nutrition for an athlete. If an athlete needs to lose fat, proper diet and exercise should be enough to achieve that weight loss.
Last but not least, use common sense when planning meals. Fried or processed foods are not a good idea.
Canned foods should also be avoided and replaced with fresh foods. Fresh foods are always the best choice, and the more natural the food is the better it is for your health.
Proper nutrition for athletes is not difficult to maintain, but it takes common sense and wise choices.
Nutrition is more important for athletes than anybody else, as they put their bodies through a great deal. Use your head and make wise, healthy choices for your nutrition.
