Oranges Nutrition value makes this sweet, tangy fruit a very healthy and beneficial food to eat. The orange is considered to be the largest commercially produced citrus crop in the world. Oranges were originally cultivated and grown in Southeastern Asia but are now grown in many areas of the world. As long as there is a warm climate or greenhouse available, these hardy citrus fruits can thrive. Today Brazil, the United States, India, Spain, Italy, Iran, Mexico, and Egypt are all major producers of oranges.


Everyone recognizes the amazing Vitamin C content that oranges contain but this fruit has many other properties that add to its usefulness. An orange that weighs about 100 grams contains less than 50 calories and no fat. That same orange also contributes about 12 carbohydrate grams and 1 gram of protein to a person's diet. When someone eats an orange, they are receiving almost 90% of the recommended daily allowance of Vitamin C, almost 5% of their daily requirement of Vitamin A and Calcium and even a small amount of iron. These vitamins and minerals are needed by our bodies but there are also carotenoids and bioflavonoids present which boost our abilities to fight cancer and damaging free radicals. The phytochemicals that are present in oranges also give us protection from heart disease.


There are 3 main groups of oranges; the sour variety, the Mandarin and the sweet oranges. The Mandarin orange is often referred to as a tangerine in some countries, but in the United States the Mandarin orange and the Tangerines are recognized as two separate species. The sweet orange is the preferred fruit for American producers and consumers and Spain is a large producer of the sour variety of oranges. The Navel, Valencia, Blood, and Jaffa oranges are in the sweet orange family and the Seville is the best-known sour variety. Sweet oranges are best for eating fresh or making into juice, while the Seville is good for jams and drinks.
