Why is Nutrition Important? It's About More Than Just Healthy Food
In this day and age, television, the radio, and the newspapers and magazines are doing a lot of talking about nutrition. What does and does not qualify as healthy food can be confusing. This is good for you, this is bad for you, nix trans fat, high fructose corn syrup is bad for you, so on and so forth; how do you know what to believe? It can be very difficult to figure out what really is nutritious and what isn't. There is no doubt that nutrition is important, but why is nutrition important?
The body needs certain things to be able to function properly. Just as a car needs gas to fuel it, the body needs food and food contains nutrients. Not just any food will do, either. When people eat food that lacks the basic nutrients necessary for living, their health suffers. These are people who appear overweight, are often tired, or are sick all of the time (or any combination of those things).
Nutrition suffers because people are in a hurry often, or think that they can save money by cutting corners when it comes to their health. Think of all of the things that you do that are bad for your health. Do you smoke? Are you a burger fanatic? Do you love pizza? Are you a junk food junkie? Consider the fact that buying healthy foods is much cheaper than investing in a pack of cigarettes every day, or buying pizza and hamburgers for every meal. These things are not only bad for your health but lack the nutrients that are needed to fuel your body. It is ‘empty' food, devoid of pretty much anything healthy for you.
The Long Term Effects of Poor Nutrition
Those who neglect proper nutrition might only have some minor issues now, like lethargy and the occasional sickness. Poor nutrition has serious long-term effects that are important to consider as well. Heart disease is one of them. Poor nutrition also leaves the immune system weak and open to invasion from serious illnesses like cancer. Osteoporosis, diabetes, and other problems can all be avoided by making good nutrition a habit in life.
Choosing Healthy Food
Choosing healthy food isn't as difficult as one might think. While organic food is a good idea, it is not always possible for many people. Organic food isn't the only kind of food that can fall into the healthy category. A person who keeps the refined sugar levels low, eats plenty of brightly colored fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and avoids processed and refined foods as much as possible is certainly on the right track for healthy eating.
Different people have different nutritional needs. For example, pollution, drinking coffee or tea, or a lot of exercise can cause different nutritional needs in the same person. Talk to your doctor about why nutrition is important for you and the kind of healthy food that you should look into to keep your body in tip-top shape.
