Training:
My team and I are preparing for a number of possibilities. I'll be ready to fight standing or on the ground and transition smoothly between the phases. We've undertaken a new conditioning routine with my Biokineticist Jono and will hopefully be prepared to go 3 rounds pushing the pace hard when necessary. We've been putting in 100% more effort that I have in past fights, in part due to the launching of EFC AFRICA which provides excellent exposure and the platform I've been waiting for. I'm very confident that we'll meet a very high level of opponent in 2010 for which I'll need to be in great shape. I've also been ironing out weaknesses and learning how to make better use of my strengths.
When and why did you start training for fighting?
I competed in Judo for a few years and saw UFC 1, became more interested in Jiu-jitsu type grappling and started entering no gi grappling comps in 1999 in Cape Town. Was invited to compete in K1 Africa in 1999 (I think) and fought the first legal, professional MMA fight on South African soil, which I lost in overtime. I converted to no gi grappling and Brazilian Jiujitsu training specifically and haven't looked back. More recently I've focused 100% on mixed martial arts training with less emphasis on pure grappling.
Accomplishments in pro or amateur competition:
Brown Belts in BJJ and Judo, clean record at international MMA, dominated u77 weight division for 10 years in SA as well as the no-gi grappling circuit, Provincial colours for Judo and 2 x 4th places in SA for Judo. All MMA losses out of weight category.
Favourite technique:
Let me get to the ground and no matter who you are you'll have a problem. I train with the top striking coach Richard Quan; I'm not known for my stand-up but watch this space.
What does it mean for you to fight in EFC AFRICA?
It's a dream come true. It's the top organization in Africa and years after I started, I'm here. Everything I've done has been a stepping stone into the EFC AFRICA world and hopefully I can go on and have a decent career here. I still can't believe it, to be honest - it's unreal.
Other interesting info:
I'm a compulsive trainer and love the art of Brazilian Jiujitsu. I believe that BJJ can provide the answer to any situation at a very high level. Have a beautiful 4 year old little girl called Madison-Marie and an amazing girlfriend called Nicole.
Your future in MMA:
I want to fight the best opponents available and to perform to my full potential. I want to take on some big name fighters and am confident that I'll be able to shake things up a bit. I'd like to fight in either the States or Japan in one of the big promotions and fight some of their champions. I'm also pretty keen to finalize some financial & product sponsors that'll allow me to focus more on my training & fighting.
I'd like to help develop the level of local fighters and get us to a point where SA MMA fighters compete against the best from overseas and fare well. And of course I want to ensure that PE Submission Fighting Academy and Fightfit Militias next generation of MMA fighters remain at the top of the local circuit. I enjoy fighting in front of South African supporters and look forward to stopping more international opposition for them.
